First Grade Curriculum Highlights

The major focus in first grade is literacy (reading, writing, spelling, speaking and listening) and math.
  • Our mornings are dedicated to literacy which includes both large and small group activities, songs, movement, shared reading, guided reading, writing, word work, spelling, and handwriting. Students in K-2 use Zaner-Bloser's reading program, Superkids.  Students need a solid foundation in literacy in order to successfully pursue all other subjects.
  • Our math program is Pearson's Investigations in Number, Data and Space. This is an inquiry-based approach to math that develops students' understanding of the meaning behind the procedure.  By engaging in games and problem-solving activities, students learn to communicate, reflect on and demonstrate their understandings of the concepts explored.

  • Science will also be explored this year.  Students investigate Air and Weather, Sound and Light, and Plants and Animals.
  • Social Studies is integrated throughout the year. Our unit topics are enhanced by our subscription to the magazine, Social Studies Weekly.
  • Interacting appropriately with others is the focus of Second Step, a program taught in all grades.

  • Special subjects taught by other teachers are Art, Music, Health/Physical Education, Library, and Spanish.
