Longhorns' Latest

Welcome 2017.  Here it is, January and the halfway point of the school year.  All of the students are working hard and becoming more independent at every turn. Our kindergarteners are well settled into the rigors of school and our 5th graders are enjoying life at the top.

January at Conley School brings our Great Kindness Challenge.  During the week of January 23 we will kick off our Second Step character education program and begin a variety of planned activities for the spring to foster kindness and respect.  As students grow up, they begin to understand that empathy and respect are the hallmarks of a warm and inviting school culture.  We hope through our Great Kindness Challenge and the Second Step program to continue to create a warm inviting climate for everyone at Conley School.  Please check out the Second Step website, www.secondstep.org with the activation code provided to you in a letter from Cathie Rutledge, for more information about the program.

Because all children make mistakes as they grow up it is important for us to help them voice their concerns without fear of recrimination and work together to solve a problem.  Once a problem is out “on the table” it is important that all students feel they have a part in the solution and that the solution is mutually satisfactory and realistic for both parties.  As adults we need to help children understand our point of view, as well; that safety and respectful behavior are our number one concerns and WHY.  We need to help them discover that there are two sides to every solution, but neither has to necessarily be the only answer. By modeling respectful behaviors, discussing, clarifying and listening together, we can all work toward a mutually agreeable solution to most any problem.

Looking forward to a happy healthy New Year.  Enjoy your children.  They grow up fast.

Respectfully,
Jane
